Royal jelly is a secretion from the hypopharyngeal and mandibular (dusts) glands, located at the head of the bee next to the brain. It is secreted by young worker bees aged between five to twelve days, whose task is to take care of the brood – the queen, worker bees and drones. Their glands start functioning only after the fourth day of life and cease to secrete nutrition jelly after the eleventh day.
It is a white to yellow in colour and a thick liquid with a characteristic odour and sour, slightly pungent and slightly sweet taste. With aging it becomes denser, in contact with air it may also change colour.
