Propolis is composed of different vegetable pitch that bees gather on the buds of poplar, birch and other plants. Accumulated pitch bees add secretions from the salivary glands. Bees add wax to pitch, so the substance becomes sticky. The colour of propolis ranges from green-yellow to dark brown, depending on the origin and age. At high temperatures it is adhesive, at low temperatures fragile and crumbles at breaking.
Chemical content of propolis: pitch and balsams, wax, essential oils, pollen. The exact physico-chemical methods found 60 different substances in propolis, of which the most characteristic ones are flavones, flavonoids, various organic acids, aldehydes and others.
Many medical reports prove propolis inhibits the growth of bacteria or even destroys it, accelerates wound healing and helps in the treatment of inflammation. Its antibiotic activity is important, as it affects not only bacteria but also a variety of viruses. It is often used in rheumatic diseases, to strengthen the immune system, anemia, the diseases of the respiratory tract, inflammation of the oral cavity, toothache, inflammation of the stomach lining, with different injuries and skin diseases.
